Often, so much focus is on preparing for labor and birth that when a new baby comes home, parents can feel like they’ve been thrown into the deep end. Support from a postpartum doula can help ease the transition for first-time parents and for those growing to a family with other children.
You might want a postpartum doula’s help during the first few days after coming home with your new baby. Or you might hire doulas for multiple days of the week for the first several weeks.
A birth doula provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. They offer evidence-based guidance on birth plans, pain management techniques, and postpartum recovery, helping to create a positive and empowering experience. A birth doula is there to advocate for your preferences, provide comfort measures, and support both the birthing person and their partner. Research shows that having a birth doula can lead to shorter labors, fewer interventions, and a more satisfying overall experience.
- Prenatal visits to discuss your birth plan, preferences, and any concerns you may have.
- Continuous support during labor and delivery
- Emotional support
- Advocacy for your birth preferences

- Perform medical tasks such as checking vital signs, administering medications, or delivering the baby.
- Make decisions on behalf of the birthing person or their family; they provide information and support to help you make informed choices.
- Replace the role of a midwife, doctor, or nurse during labor and delivery.
- Take over the role of your partner or other support persons; instead, they work alongside them to enhance their involvement.
- Provide postpartum care beyond the immediate hours after birth (this is typically the role of a postpartum doula).
- Prescribe treatments or give medical advice; they offer evidence-based information but leave medical decisions to you and your healthcare provider.
A birth doula can be invaluable for anyone seeking continuous support during labor and delivery. Whether it’s your first baby or you’re adding to your family, having a birth doula can provide reassurance and comfort throughout the process.
If you’re feeling anxious about childbirth, want someone experienced to advocate for your preferences, or desire additional support alongside your partner, a birth doula might be right for you. Even if you have a medical team in place, a birth doula can offer the personalized care and attention that might not be possible otherwise.
